How To Build A Fish Pond

How to build a fish pond in a weekend

If you already have an aquarium in your home then you know the benefits of keeping fish and the serenity they bring to your life.

If you have a garden you can also enjoy those benefits outdoors by building a fish pond and stocking it with fish.

That’s what I did! I enjoy the aquarium I’ve set up in my living room and I also wanted to enjoy the sound of water in my garden so I decided to build a a fish pond which I’ve stocked quite simply with comets and fantails. They are easily managed fish and require little attention other than daily feeding.

I had a lot of fun planning the pond, choosing the location and deciding on the layout. I chose a location quite close to the house because I wanted to be able to see the pond and hear the water from inside the house. I have a small fountain attached to the filter so I can enjoy the sound of running water.

One of the biggest issues I had with the pond initially was algae. The pond receives sunlight in the summer which encourages the growth of algae but one of the benefits of the sunlight is that it also allows me grow some very attractive water lilies. The water lily pads now provide shade for the pond in the summer time, the algae has been reduced and the water is clear. There is still algae clinging to the sides of the pond but this is a natural phenomenon and the fish nibble on it from time to time.
