Fish tank care and maintenance is an absolutely necessary for anyone who wants a freshwater aquarium. If done regularly freshwater fish tank care doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming.

Probably the most important piece of equipment for freshwater fish tank care is the filter. There are a couple of different types of filtration systems. The one you will see most often is a box that fits over the side of the tank. The water is circulated through the filtration system, which usually uses charcoal to filter the impurities out of the water. Another type of filtration system is a biological filtration system. This can be used in conjunction with the charcoal filtration system, and allows good bacteria to grow in the tank and which can help keep the tank clean.

Too many fish in the tank can lead to problems, especially if the tank is too small. Make sure you have the correct fish population for the size of your tank. Do no overfeed your fish. Fish should only be fed an amount that they can eat within a few minutes. If you feed the fish too much, the leftovers fall to the bottom of the tank and turn into sludge which will not provide a healthy environment for your fish.

Changing the fish tank water

You will need to do a partial water change every three weeks or so. Usually, siphoning off about 20 percent of the water is adequate. Replace with fresh water. If your tap water contains chlorine it is imperative that you add chlorine neutralizer when adding fresh water to your aquarium.

Keep an eye on your fish and observe their behavior - this can help with your fish tank maintenance issues by picking up any problems while they are treatable. If the fish are looking unhealthy, take a proactive approach and find out what is wrong with them. Many fungal diseases can be successfully treated. Maintaining a clean fish tank and a healthy living environment are not difficult tasks in freshwater fish tank care and a little preemptive action can save heartache with your fish later.
